Unpopular opinions
Here's a page where I'm going to list all the opinions I hold which go against popular opinion. It ranges from very trivial things like opinions on TV/Movies, to very controversial social or political things. Please note that this is just a summary and as such I do make generalisations. If you happen to go against some things I say, don't take it personally as I understand the world is nuanced and that individually people can have good reasons for going against the opinions I hold at a more general level.
Why does this page exist?
It might seem like just asking for trouble having a page like this, but I think it's a good thing because:
- It's honestly a bit self-indulgent, allows me to rant and praise things I want to
- It filters out the sorts of people who can't tolerate people having certain opinons
- It rules out the risk of someone close feeling "betrayed" for finding out you have an opinion they can't tolerate
- It can make for interesting and educational discussion with open-minded people
- It's a means of fighting back against political correctness which demmands certain opinions be silenced
- It can be a breath of fresh air for people who share my opinions to see others share them
- It acts as a starting point for potential blog articles expanding upon my reasoning
But anyway, with that out the way, here's my list of unpopular opinions in no particular order:
Animals
- I don't like dogs
Moreso than the dogs themselves though, I dislike the weird fanaticism for dogs. E.g expectation that everyone should love dogs and that something is wrong with people who don't, and the desire to project human emotions and intelligence onto dogs. - On a related note I think anyone who values animals over humans has a mental issue
I care about animals and I find animal cruelty abhorrent, but I've noticed people increasingly saying they prefer animals to humans, would save the life of an animal over the life of a human, etc. Sometimes it's just said flippantly, but oftentimes it's not, and it should be seen as a red flag for someone who's immature and lacks compassion.
Comics (and comic-based movies/tv)
- I don't like the Sandman comics
Neil Gaiman's Sandman comics are often considered some of the best comics of all time and also a top recommendation for a "must-read". I really can't see why that is. Not only did I not find it interesting, but I found it so tedious to read that it's the only comics run I've ever given up reading. I've heard people say in the past that people like me are just reading it wrong, looking for a simple, linear story instead of appreciating the various short-stories that comprise it in their own right, as well as how they come together later on. I would argue that the stories are not particularly interesting when judged individually, and the way they come together is just a structural novelty, not something profound as it's often treated. - I think the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy are the best superhero movies ever made
Not only that, but I'd place the infamous third movie above most other iterations of Spider-Man as well. Admittedly I'm very biased by my own nostalgia as it was one of the first superhero movies I ever watched, but I still think they stand out amongst superhero movies. I could write an article explaining why, but I'll instead direct you to HiTop Films' videos on Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, and Spider-Man 3 as I mostly agree with him and he explains it better than I ever could. - I think MCU fanatics who pretend it's deep, mature content, and MCU haters who think it's the death of cinema are equally wrong
For the most part they're just fun popcorn flicks and nothing is wrong with that. We are getting less original movies thesedays, but the cause isn't specifically superhero movies, but instead a shift from original movies to established IPs (Intellectual properties) because established IPs are less financially risky, and often easier to write for. So we end up with with a lot of sequels, prequels, reboots and spin-offs of existing IPs. Those are not just superhero IPs, but they are especially suited to that business model because churning out new stories with the same IPs is something comics have already been doing for decades. - I think Disney should make more stand-alone Marvel movies
I think the MCU is great and still think it should be the focus of the Marvel movies, but something is definitely lost when making MCU movies, as they have to conform to a certain mould, whether that's obvious things like continuity, or more subtle things like the tone of the movie. I understand that it might be confusing to the average viewer, but I'd love to have multiple iterations of the character having movies around the same time to cater to different tastes and demographics, rather than have to stay with one iteration which we might not like, for a very long time (For example with MCU's Iron Man, those who don't like him have been stuck with him since 2008). - I prefer organic webbing for Spider-Man rather than mechanical web-shooters
As mentioned above I'm a big fan of the Raimi Spider-Man trilogy where organic webbing was popularized so that may bias me somewhat, but it's disingenuous to pretend that the only reason anyone prefers organic webbing is due to the movie. I'll probably write a blogpost explaining my own reasoning at some point. - I dislike The Dark Knight movies and feel they did more harm than good to the superhero genre
I could probably make an entirely separate blogpost about it, but in short I felt it stripped all the comicbook elements to turn it into a bland action movie. I'm all for superhero movies being more adult but you can do that whilst still keeping the comicbook aesthetic and setting. The Watchmen movie is an example of this, and "The Batman (2022)" manages to strike a good balance too. Unfortunately TDK series was a hit (especially amongst critics) so a lot of superhero movies (particularly the DC ones) followed its lead. - Schumacher's Batman movies (Batman Forever, Batman and Robin) are my favourite aesthetically
The movies as a whole have a lot of problems, but I feel like Schumacher's visual choices are really underappreciated. It's impossible to completely capture the look of a comicbook in a live action movie as it's a different medium, but with the use of colours and lighting it's the closest I've seen to matching it. It's not at all realistic and that's it strength, the colours and lighting look like they've come right out of a classic comicbook, and Gotham looks like I'd expect it to, fantastical and larger than life, yet still dark and corrupt. - I thought the Watchmen movie was great
It's by no means a favourite movie of mine or even a favourite superhero movie, but I liked it a lot and I consider it underrated. Alan Moore is one of my favourite comicbook writers and I know he's outspoken against the movie, but that doesn't hinder my enjoyment of it (though I'd agree it's not a good representation of the source material, and I think the comic is better).
Food and drink
- I dislike the taste of water
Some people will say water is tasteless, but not being able to describe the taste is not the same as being tasteless. If you were blindfolded and given water to drink you would know it was water, so that means it has an identifiable taste, and it's a taste I don't like. - I don't like the taste of beer
And I think those who say they don't drink it for the taste should drink a better tasting alcoholic drink instead. - I don't like the taste of coffee
And no, it isn't just that I haven't tried the right sort of coffee yet. Different coffees might taste more/less sweet, bitter etc, but they'll all still taste like coffee. - I find onions disgusting
I'm not just talking about the taste. The texture, smell and even sound of its crunch all make me feel disgusted whenever I accidentally bite into one. At best they're chopped/diced so small that I can tolerate them, but they are still noticable, and anyone who says they aren't are probably lying, because if that were true there would be no reason to add them. The fact onions are added into seemingly everything makes it especially annoying. - I think the idea that certain disliking certain food/drink is childish, is childish
I'm sure some people read the opinions above and think it sounds childish/immature. It's true that tastebuds change as people get older, but they don't always change the same way or to the same extent. It's fair to expect people to tolerate a wider range of food and drink as they get older, but actually liking them is irrelevant to a person's maturity. - I don't see anything wrong with admitting unhealthy food usually tastes better than healthy food
The reason people get into unhealthy eating habits is because unhealthy food usually tastes better for most people. For some reason a lot of healthy people feel the need to deny this common sense, and equate expressing a liking to the taste of unhealthy food with advocating people eat more of it. It's elitist and only serves to make healthy living feel more alien and inaccessible to the average person.
Music
- I don't see Beatles music as anything special
Don't get me wrong, I like their music, I know they were talented and they undoubtably had a big impact on music as well as the wider culture - but I feel like the music itself isn't as special as people think. Star-power and fandom have biased people's perception of it. - I think most rap/hip-hop music is cringy
Whilst I can understand teenagers finding it cool because it's edgy, I'm baffled why adults enjoy it beyond nostalgia. Even when the lyrics aren't particularly edgy it just sounds dumb to me.
Politics
- I think the voting age should go up
Because people thesedays are maturing later and have less life experience than previous generations. Also usually when you hear for calls to bring the voting age down or for more young people to vote it's usually coming from the political left who know that they can easier exploit young people with their more naive and idealistic messages (that's not to say that there can't be mature reasons for left-wing stances though) - Dismissing all conspiracy theories as nonsense automatically doesn't make you seem smart, it does the opposite
People should be wary of jumping on conspiracy bandwagons too easily but it's common sense that some powerful people with shared interests are bound to plan things that benefit themselves at the expense of others. That's all a conspiracy is. - "Diversity" is not a strength and it's reckless to encourage more of it.
More difference means more potential reasons for conflict/avoidance, and less things to bond/relate over.
Religion, spiritual, supernatural, etc
- I'm an agnostic and believe that's the most logical position to take.
In short we can't difinitively prove one way or the other if God exists. That's not to say I'm anti-religion, only that people following religion should do so because they choose to live as if there is a God, rather than to insist there definitely is one. - Dismissing everything supernatural or beyond the physical makes you narrow-minded
We should be very skeptical of such things, but just because science can't measure something doesn't necessarily make it false. - I believe magic is real, but just not in the way people think of magic
I believe magic essentially boils down to a means of using language, ritual, symbols etc to alter people's perception, behaviour, etc. You could use the word "persuasion" to mean similar, though persuassion has a more selfish, immoral connotation.
Social/etiquette
- I don't get the appeal of clubs
- I don't enjoy sport
Not only that but I find it a very dull subject to talk about, and often used as a substitute for a personality for people who haven't much else they can talk about. - Anyone who says "I'm sorry but.." or "I'm sorry that.." can't be a real apology is wrong
Explaining your reasons shows you're sincere and helps the other person understand your perspective, otherwise you're encouraging people to just lie in future instead. - I think wearing shoes indoors is really unhygienic
- I'm a "night owl" and hate the assumption that sleeping in is for slackers and that morning people are automatically better.
The truth is some people are naturally more suited to later hours, and being forced into getting up early for work, school, etc is unhealthy for them so sleeping in whenever they get the opportunity is the correct thing to do for their health. - I hate when people use internet-speak online It sounds very cringy to me and very immature. Some internet-speak is more annoying than others, e.g "I did a/the thing!" is particularly annoying, as it a person calling something "adulting".
Technology
- Apple products are primarily a status/fashion statement and people should stop pretending otherwise
You can buy just as good if not better products for the same price if not cheaper. I also don't really understand why people do consider it a symbol of wealth /status, at least in first-world nations, because whilst Apple products are overpriced, they are affordable to most people. A true symbol of wealth and status would be something like an expensive car, house, membership to an exclusive club etc because all of those things are inaccessible to most people, and are therefore impressive or at least imply the person is more successful in life than others. - On a related note Steve Jobs and Apple aren't revolutionary in any way
They're just very good at adapting and marketing innovations they copy from other companies - Most people who say they need a certain peice of paid/proprietary software are wrong
Thesedays free alternatives exist which are just as capable but they're overlooked because it's not what they've learned and are less widely used. It's frustratingly an unnecessary problem on a societal level but on an individual level many people find themselves pushed into using proprietary software, because it's what their school or workplace taught them or demanded they use, or they're programs/operating system their computer came with. People might think that the fact they are used in most schools and businesses is proof that they must be better, but that's not true. There are many deeply-rooted reasons why it is, which have nothing to do with the quality of the software, but it will take a dedicated webpage to explain why (I'll make one at some point).
Television and film
- I think LOST is the greatest TV show ever made
I also think that the ending was great, and the first season (usually considered the best) is my least favourite - I liked Heroes a lot and although it got worse over time I still enjoyed it throughout
I thought Heroes Reborn was bad though. - I think Star Wars is very overrated
I enjoy Star Wars but I don't understand why it's such a big, timeless cultural phenomena - The same applies to Harry Potter
I think Rowling created a compelling world that captures the imagination, but beyond that it's given far more credit than it's due. It seems to especially be a problem with Millennials who grew up with the books and movies. - I don't like westerns
- I don't like crime tv shows
Crime movies can be interesting, but crime TV shows bore me and I think the main reason they're so common is that they're cheap to make and easy to stretch out. - I really disliked The Leftovers
It's often recommended to LOST fans but I feel it was trying to hard to seem deep with religious symbolism and most of the characters weren't likeable - I think Breaking Bad is overrated
I enjoyed it but I don't see it as anything special - Despite being considered one of Britains most beloved comedies, Only Fools and Horses ranks pretty low for me compared to other British comedies
